On Trains

I have been fascinated by trains almost since the beginning. I will go out of my way to ride scale trains, such as those found at the Redwood Valley Railway in Tilden Park near Berkeley, California. However, one of my friends just sent me a link to a supply house for G and other scale trains. This piqued my interest in the smaller-scale trains.

My own ambition is to build a live steam scale train, possibly in G scale, but maybe in a larger scale, depending on whether I can find the right place. Living in the postage-stamp lots that are common in the Bay Area is not conducive to garden railroading, regrettably.

Some links to scale trains and live steam-related sites are as follows:

I am sure I have left out some useful sources, but this is a place to start. Your local hobby shop is also usually a good resource. And if you are lucky enough to live in a town with a non-chain, monster toy store, that is also a good place to begin. Have fun!

Just found your note about the Redwood Valley Rwy and scale railroads. The RVRy has been in operation for well over 50 years and has a great crew. There are other railways that you might want to visit in Northern California too. As for the small lots in your area, there is a gentleman in Concord who has built his own 15" grand scale railway on his small lot and there are others too. So dream big! You can make it happen.
